- Keyword Research – if you did this when you launched the site, do it over again now. Keyword use changes as internet users become more sophisticated. The most searched phrase for your site may well have changed from two to three terms. You may find new terms or more productive long tailed terms you’ve overlooked before. Don’t just rely on a keyword research tool; ask your friends or better yet, your customers what terms they would use to find your site.
- Blog – whether on or off your site, create a blog and post to it at least twice a week. It doesn’t have to cost anything but your time. if you use https://www.blogger.com/. When you post, use Twitter to let your followers know that you have published something new.
- Build content. What new articles or posts does your keyword research suggest? What’s new in your industry?
- Tweak your on-site SEO, but don’t overdo it. Do check your on-site optimization against your new keyword research. Are there title tags that should be changed? Are you using the best anchor text for your internal links? Have you properly utilized the alt tags of all your images? Are you using h1-h3 tags correctly – much as you would for an outline of a theme paper?
- How’s your accessibility? In addition to increasing your site’s effectiveness by being more accessible to largely untapped market segments, (see: Introduction to How People with Disabilities Use the Web) there are more and more SEOs who believe Google responds positively to accessible sites.
- Add Google Analytics to your site. There are other traffic tools, of course, but GA is free and about as robust as it gets. For SEO purposes, you can see what keywords are successfully drawing visitors to your site. You can see which pages are most clicked and which aren’t. You may want to rewrite the copy on pages that aren’t visited or move their links.
- Track your position in the SERPs. Find a tracking tool you like and add the terms from your keyword research. Establish your baseline so that you can see how the site changes over time for your targeted phrases.
